We just got back from a 4 day trip to Puerto Rico, staying at the El San Juan. Our first impression was not good. We arrived early and the scene there was hectic. The staff was nice, but they seemed to be overwhelmed. We walked around the grounds and the pool area and surrounding grounds were dated. Some of the wood on the patio roofs were rotting. The entrance to the hotel makes you feel like you've arrived at an upscale hotel, but inside it is quite dated. The lobby consists of dark wood walls and ceilings with red curtains. I felt like I was in an old western or old house in a horror flick. It also had a feel like we were in Las Vegas with cheesie lighting and bars. The corridors to rooms were not dark, as some have stated, but rather nice. When you get in the room it appears bright and modern, but once you sit down and look around, you see that attention to detail was very lacking. The walls had scuffs, the painting between walls and floor boards was uneven. The "crystal" lamp was all clear plastic. The hotel just needs to be updated with quality materials. For a work trip, that I did no pay for, it was OK. If it was my vacation and it came out of my pocket, I would have been very disappointed. Do yourself a BIG favor and stay in Old San Juan. It is a much nicer area.

We booked our stay at the El San Juan Hotel and Casino because it was associated with the Waldorf Astoria name. We were expecting well-maintained facilities with excellent customer service but experienced the exact opposite. The rooms were dirty and in desperate need of renovations. Many of the indoor fixtures were rusty and not working. The smell of the rooms and common areas left little to be desired. When we asked the front desk to switch us to a different room (we even offered to pay more) we were told they would have a manager contact us shortly. We waited for over 2 hours in our dirty room and were never contacted by a manager so we called again and were rudely told the room we were in was the only option for us. We are not overly picky travelers and but these rooms were not even liveable. The pictures on the hotels website are very decieving - the rooms and amenities are not as they appear. The only nice part of the entire resort was the main lobby. We met other travelers that were as equally disappointed as we were. We checked out after only one night and will never return to this run down hotel again.

I just returned from PR on 5/22/10.........All and all the Hotel Staff and Restaurants were excellent. The ocean and pool area made me feel as if I were in paradise. Would I return??? I plan on returning August or September of this year. The only thing that was not exciting for me was the casino. I am a slot player and they just were not working for me. I had a great time......and I travel alone. I am a widow.
